UPDATE: Much to my dismay, it turns out that the bears were not spotted in Deerfield Township shopping at Chicos as I had suspected. Rather, the (one) black bear was spotted a bear out in Adams County by Adena Pollard. Here are some awesome things she said about her bear encounter:

"[I] Opened the blind up and looked down and I seen something big and black. At first, I did think it was a raccoon and then I was like what is that and it was way bigger than a raccoon and he turned around and looked up at me and walked off."
Ok, she thought it was a raccoon? WTF? How big are the raccoons out in Adams County?

"It was kind of my fault too because I had left my trash on the porch the night before and that's what he came after he drug it off the porch and underneath the window, he ate the Wendy's baked potato, basically."
I have to agree with the bear here, those Wendy's baked potatoes are pretty damn good.

So, the message here is clear: If you live in Adams County (as I'm sure many of my readers do), don't eat at Wendy's. Also, look out for giant raccoons. Thanks Channel 12!

Logo Redesign

The Washington Capitals redesigned their logo recently, and moved to a version very similar to their old school logo.

I loved their old logo with just the type and the stick for the "T" so I'm happy to see them going back to their heritage. Although I kind of liked the interim one with the Capital rotunda.

My problem with the new one is that the lettering seems awkward. The "A" seems oddly condensed, while the "P" seems way too big. It all seems a little disjointed, but I do love the simplicity of it.

I'm curious to hear the Reverend Action Jackson's thoughts on the logo, since he's a big Caps fan as well as a designer.

I saw some dude cruising down 6th Street on his Segway tonight, so I thought a post about the future was in order.

Believe it or not, they still make Segways, even though you never see anyone on them, ever (Except for the city of Chicago, which bought a bunch for their cops to ride around on...and Gob Bluth in one of the funniest shows ever, Arrested Development).

Anyway, this guy looked pretty ridiculous on his Segway, but I guess I need to start getting used to this crazy futuristic world we live in.

Also, the video above is from the new HBO show "Flight of the Conchords." Sunday nights at 10:30. It's hilarious, check it out.

The grounds crew had some trouble getting the tarp on.

The Reds were losing 7-3 in the 8th inning when the skies opened up and about 16 inches of rain fell in about 4 minutes (these numbers are approximate). A few of the highlights:

• Some old guy's hat blew off the top of his head, and I think ended up somewhere near Batavia.

• People were running for cover and screaming like Godzilla was coming. They were totally freaking out because they got a little wet.

• A member of the grounds crew was dragged about 30 feet by the tarp when the wind kicked up. Kudos to him for holding on, it was pretty sweet to watch.

Moving takes forever.

Ok, so I know it's been a little while since I've posted on this blog. But it's been a crazy couple of months lately here at Paullelujah. I was busy
getting engaged, watching the Reds suck, taking day trips to Detroit and training for a marathon.

I'm going to try to update more than once every two months.

Reds vs. Phillies

Here are a couple of quick photos of our day in Sarasota. The Reds beat the Phillies 7-0 today behind a strong outing by Bronson Arroyo and some bombs by Dunn and Phillips. Arroyo looked great and apparently was only thowing fastballs and changeups, just to see what would happen. He didn't allow a run, so he should be fine when he adds the curveball back into his repertoire.

We hit the Daiquiri Deck after the game for some food, beers and to watch the basketball games. My brackets are crumbling tonight, it's not looking good.

Ed Smith Stadium...the weather in Sarasota today was in the low 80s and mostly sunny.

Junior made his spring debut today. He had a couple of hits, but it was a little strange seeing him in rightfield.

Hamilton pinch hitting for Arroyo. He's been awesome this spring, and I can't wait to see how he fares when the regular season begins. Not only is he a great hitter, he also has a laser, rocket arm.

Gina loves when the grounds crew does the YMCA.

Haircut Day

My brother Ted (a.k.a. Lewis) is probably the funniest person I know. Every time I see him, he cracks me up. This morning in our hotel, he asked me if I'd cut his hair. I said yes, but told him to wait a couple of minutes. While he was waiting, he went into the bathroom and started with the clippers on his own. The result can be seen below, and is yet another reason why he is the funniest person I know.
FYI, I finished off the back for him after these pictures were taken.

Reds vs. Devil Rays

The Reds brought their "B-team" up to St. Pete today to face the mighty Rays. Freel, Gonzalez, Phillips, Ross and Josh Hamilton were the only regulars in the starting lineup, which also included Harang on the mound. After about the 3rd inning, the regulars got the rest of the night off and we got to see the AA Reds. Harang looked ok, except for the awful 2nd inning when he gave up 4 runs.

Hamilton hit the ball hard every time he was up. It was cool to see a couple of his at bats in person. I'm pretty excited about having him on the team this year.

We left early to catch the UNC/USC game, but I read later that the final score was 15-1. Yikes.

Griffey is finally in the lineup today versus Philly. First time this spring.

Here's the view from our hotel in Tampa. Instead of the windows facing outside, they face into this indoor courtyard sort of thing. The hotel is on one side of the courtyard, and an office complex is on the other. so instead of looking out to a view of the bay, palm trees and sun, I get to look at this poor bastard still at work.

It was shaping up to be another great first round upset in the NCAA Tournament. It's become almost a sure thing, each year you can bank on a team from the MAC with a 12 or 13 seed pulling off one of the big surprises of the first two days by knocking off a 4 or 5 seed.

Miami slipped into the field of 64 knocking off Ohio, Toledo and finally Akron with a last second 3 pointer (off the glass) to win the MAC title and earn an automatic berth. That bank shot earned them a 14 seed in the Midwest bracket and a matchup in Spokane, Washington with Oregon.

I left work today and got home just in time to catch the second half of the game. As I turned on the tv, I was a little surprised to see that Miami was hanging around, only down five. Oregon couldn't build much of a lead as Miami's defense kept the Ducks normally high scoring offense in check. As the minutes ticked off the clock, Miami wouldn't go away. With less than two minutes to go, they were still in the game. I wondered, could my alma mater pull it off?

As time expired, Michael Bramos hit a half court shot that beat the buzzer. Unfortunately, that still left Miami three points shy of a win. Close, but not close enough.

IN OTHER BASKETBALL NEWS: Suck it, Duke. They lost in the first round yesterday to VCU, which absolutely made my day. And I'm proud to say that I picked VCU to win in my brackets. The only thing that would make me happier during the NCAA tournament is if UNC wins it all.

Anticipation

The feeling is like Christmas Eve when I was a kid...the happiness, the excitement, the anticipation. Except this time, Christmas Eve lasts for about a month and a half.

Spring Training is now in full swing. The temperatures are in the 70s and the sun is shining in Florida. Pitchers and catchers reported to camp mid-February, and exhibition games started this week. Marty's familiar voice is back on the radio, and even better this year, he's teaming up with his son Thom.

There's always hope in the spring - hope that this year is the year that your team makes it to the playoffs, before the injuries, batting slumps, 6.47 ERAs and costly errors replace those hopes with disappointment. Maybe this year will be different. Maybe this year is the year it all comes together. Maybe?

Opening Day is a month away...and it can't get here soon enough.

I'm starting to follow the NBA again this year. I used to follow "The Association" as the Sportscenter anchors call it, back when I was a kid living in Milwaukee and had a pro team in town to root for. Since moving away when I was 13, I haven't had a team to call my own here in Cincinnati, and the local NBA coverage is non-existent.

So why is this year different? Why do I suddenly care about the Bucks, and the NBA as a whole, again? Two reasons. One, guys like D-Wade, 'Melo, and LeBron are making the NBA interesting. It's suddenly become fun to watch again. And two, I bought a new HDTV last fall, and TNT shows lots of NBA games in hi-def, and I'm a sucker for anything in hi-def, so I've been watching a lot of TNT lately.

After watching much more of the NBA this year than I have in the past 15 years combined, I have a question.

Hey, um, Washington Wizards, what's up with your uniforms?

Ok, seriously, these are the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. They're on par with the 1976 White Sox uniforms, you know, the ones that had shorts instead of pants! They are the Wizards alternate road uniforms, and hopefully by alternate, they mean never again. They're gold, and made of a weird super-shiny fabric that makes them look even worse. The jerseys have black stars running up the sides, which "complement" the black shorts they've decided to wear with these hideous jerseys. I keep waiting for the players to don actual pointy wizard hats and magic wands on the court to complete the look. Here are a few pictures of Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler sporting this atrocity.

Washington, please, for the sake of my fragile eyes, stick to the blue and white you normally wear. Didn't you see how awful Michael Irvin looked wearing his crazy gold suits? That's probably what got him fired! What makes you think a gold uniform would look any better? Oh, and Atlanta Hawks...you're not much better with those awful yellow things I saw you wearing tonight.

Erase all doubt from your mind, for tonight, you will know love. Let me tell you how I am going to lay it down.

This afternoon, while you are on lunch break, I will have a handpicked team of florists cover your desk at work with a mixture of sensuous-smelling rose petals. They will also leave a note reading, "Girl, you are most fine. I will pick you up at 8." This will show you and your coworkers that Smoove is the man for you, as well as give you a glimpse into the personal attention I will lavish on you later that evening.

I will also instruct the delivery person to wait and clean the flowers off your desk when you are done looking at them, so that you can continue with your work day.

At precisely 8 o'clock, I will arrive in a pearl-white car to pick you up and transport us to dinner at the city's finest European restaurant. I will tell the driver to take the most romantic, scenic route possible to the restaurant. On the way, I will have a sterling-silver thermos filled with hot chocolate from the Swiss chocolate region. If it is too hot for you, I will blow on it until it is the correct temperature.

When you have finished the cocoa, I will take the empty cup away from you and pack up the thermos. I will then nuzzle your neck and whisper complimentary remarks into your ear, including, "You are more beautiful than a thousand lakes," "You are extremely special to me," and "Your bone structure belongs in a museum." This will make you wet.

Damn, girl. I want to get freaky with you right now on my desk. I want to ride you like a bronco.

When we arrive at the expensive European restaurant, the owner will greet me warmly and comment positively on your attire. He will then personally lead us to a private table I have specially selected for our evening together. As we browse the menu, I will inform you that if multiple appetizers are your wish, I can make that wish come true.

When the appetizers arrive, I will feed them to you with my hands, which I will have hand-washed with special anti-bacterial soap to ensure their cleanliness. You will then eat an entree of your choice and a dessert. While we eat these various foods, we will discuss your fineness and also your hopes and dreams for the future. This will make you feel closer to me and, as a result, make you want to sex me wild.

After the meal, we will forgo transportation and walk the five blocks back to my apartment, because the night will be so fragrant and beautiful. I will hold your hand and stroke your wrist lightly with my thumb. As we approach my apartment, I will pull you close, and it will feel right. Today I got some great news - one of my favorite restaurants is coming to a location near me!

If you haven't been to BD's Mongolian Barbeque, you're missing out. Missing out on what, you ask? How about a seemingly endless array of meats, vegetables, oils and spices, all for you to choose from and put into a big bowl. Mix whatever you want together and throw it on the grill. In a few minutes your food is cooked. Perhaps you're enjoying some chicken. Maybe it's steak. Maybe you're vegetarian and you're getting a little crazy with the tofu. Hell, why not have all three! If you get the buffet, you can go up for as many times as you want! The point is, it's delicious.

If you live in southwest Ohio, there's a good chance haven't been to BD's, because the nearest location is Columbus - until now! According to their website , they are opening a new location in Deerfield Township. I think that's somewhere near Mason. And definitely close enough for me to drive there all the time!

I can't wait!

And not in a "just got tased" kind of way. More in the, "I can't believe I don't weigh 900 pounds" kind of way.

While I was making my daily trip through Ronsonville , I read this post about Ronson's new obsession with food and the calories they contain. Ronson's new calorie obsession quickly became my own calorie obsession, and thanks to the link he provided, I was face to face with this terrible realization:

Little did I know that a delicious steak burrito with some cheese on it and a side of chips and salsa was a fat attack wrapped in a tortilla at a whopping 1415 calories. Add a can of Coke to that meal, which is pretty standard for me, and that jumps up to nearly 1600 calories! That leaves me with only 400 calories for the rest of the day.

Also, I'm pretty sure that 2313 mg of sodium in one meal can't be good. It just seems like a lot.

On the upside, there is 57 g of protein, which seems good, so I've got that going for me. And I'm getting 70% of my Vitamin A for the day, and Vitamin A is good, right? I mean, it is a vitamin.

But still, it's way more unhealthy for me than I thought it was. Unfortunately, this new information probably won't change my eating habits one bit, but it's good to know, I guess.

We're Going Streaking!

I never saw a prank quite this bold (or hilarious) in my high school days...I guess we were all just too modest back in the mid-90s.

Well, these crazy kids are taking it up a notch in 2007! Alleged streaker Taylor Killian clearly has no shame. But according to this CNN report , he does have a full beard and long hair, which I'm sure made this all the more horrifying for the students who were "huddled in a corner at Westerville North High School."

And the best part? No, not that this kid greased himself up before he ran so he wouldn't get caught. And no, not even this quote by Police Lt. John Petrozzi following Killian's arrest, "Hindsight being 20/20, he should have ate a burger instead. Put a jalapeno on it. I don’t know."

Um, whatever.

Nope, the best part was that he got tased - twice!

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Nike Plus kit so I could track my running. If you haven't seen one, it's basically a sensor you put in your shoe and a chip you plug into your iPod that tracks the distance and time of your runs. They only work with iPod Nanos, so even though I already have a perfectly good iPod, I went out and bought a Nano, just so I could use the Nike Plus.

So for slightly under $250 I have everything I need to eliminate the tedious process of writing down in a notebook - with a pen - how long and how far I've run. I'm sure I'm saving at least 30 seconds a day not having to do that!

What a foolish purchase, you might be saying to yourself. No way, it was totally worth it because now I'm totally addicted to running. Well, not so much the running as seeing the stats from my run when I'm done.

I've run twice with it now, and it's tracking all my miles and time. It could be the best thing ever.

If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up. It’s so choice.

Did anyone watch the Golden Globes last week? Boring!

But, there was one brightspot...did anyone else see this commercial with good ol' Orville Redenbacher? It one of the worst commercials I've seen in a while, and not just because he looks not at all human and much more like some weird popcorn-selling robot. It's also because he has what appears to be an iPod and is totally rocking out with his robot dance moves. I keep waiting for him to rip his face off to reveal the metal frame of his robot head with red lights for eyes and wires sticking out everywhere.

When I first saw it I thought to myself, it's been a while since I've seen him on a commercial, I thought he was dead.

Um...yeah, turns out he is dead, and has been for like 15 years.

So sit back, relax, maybe pop yourself some popcorn, and enjoy Orville in all his CGI glory.

Late to the Party

Recently, I heard about this new trend called "blogging" and decided to give it a shot. Actually, I didn't hear about it that recently, it was more like years ago, but I'm just now getting around to starting up my own blog after plenty of procrastination. I guess it's better late than never, though I suspect some of you will think my blog is better never than late once you read a few of my posts.
